Moving Roots Foundation is an emerging nonprofit that we are proud to support as its fiscal sponsor and organizational mentor. Formed by a collective of experienced facilitators, educators, artists, and community builders, Moving Roots weaves together autonomous projects rooted in creativity, ecology, embodied practice, and cultural memory.
Why We Support Moving Roots
At Between the Strings, we believe in nurturing initiatives that align with our mission of access, healing, and cultural expression. Moving Roots represents a constellation of projects that—while independent—are deeply interconnected through shared values. By providing structural guidance and sponsorship, we help create the conditions for these projects to flourish and establish themselves as a foundation.

A Living Network
What makes Moving Roots unique is its interwoven structure. Each project—whether rooted in somatic practice, storytelling, agroecology, or artistic residencies—contributes to a larger ecosystem of cultural and ecological renewal. Together, they reflect the possibility of collaborative growth under a common canopy, while retaining the autonomy that gives each branch its strength.

Looking Ahead
As Moving Roots continues to grow, our role as sponsor and mentor will remain a vital part of its journey. This collaboration demonstrates how established nonprofits can serve as fertile ground for new initiatives, cultivating resilient networks of creativity, ecology, and community well-being across borders.
Rooted
Practices
As the community-rooted branch of the Between the Strings Project, the Moving Roots Foundation nourishes place-based practices of healing, learning, and cultural memory across Guatemala and California. Through this living framework, initiatives like Rooted Coaching, Kapok, and Leaf Tales are able to deepen their local roots while expanding their reach. With wraparound support from Between the Strings—including shared spaces, collaborative infrastructure, and creative alliance—these programs flourish as expressions of embodied care, ancestral knowledge, and artistic regeneration in service to collective well-being.

Rooted Coaching - Rooted in Wisdom
Led by facilitator and educator Barry Goldwasser, Rooted Coaching is an intercultural program of the Moving Roots Foundation that integrates somatic practices, embodied facilitation, and creative coaching. Emerging from years of artistic and pedagogical work across Guatemala and California, Rooted Coaching places the body at the center of learning and transformation—creating spaces where individuals and communities can access resilience, memory, and expression through movement, story, and presence. Learn more here.
As a vital branch of Moving Roots, Rooted Coaching strengthens the foundation’s ecosystem through cross-cultural workshops, community initiatives, and collaborations with projects like Kapok, Leaf Tales, and Casa Caléndula. With deep roots in ancestral wisdom and contemporary somatics, Rooted Coaching serves as a bridge between tradition and innovation—offering embodied pathways for healing, leadership, and collective regeneration, in resonance with the vision of Between the Strings.

Kapok – Pedagogy of the Body
Rooted in Guatemala and cultivated over two decades by somatic guide and educator María José Aguilar, Kapok is a living inquiry into the body as a site of healing, memory, and transformation. Through somatic research, experiential learning, and training for artists, therapists, and educators, Kapok nurtures the re-connection of body and earth, gesture and story.
As a key branch of the Moving Roots Foundation, Kapok offers community-based programs at Casa Caléndula and Finca Entre las Cuerdas, and is laying the groundwork for a Somatic Training School, opening in 2026. In deep resonance with the vision of Between the Strings, Kapok brings body-centered pedagogy into the heart of artistic and ecological regeneration.

Leaf Tales – Herbs For Health
Founded by herbalist and cultural worker Tania Montenegro, Leaf Tales carries over a decade of devotion to nourishing the body and spirit through conscious nutrition, traditional herbal practices, and the revival of ancestral culinary memory. Through small-batch remedies, women’s wellness workshops, and community gatherings, Leaf Tales invites participants to slow down, listen to the land, and remember the wisdom within.
A vital expression of the Moving Roots Foundation, Leaf Tales brings together food, ritual, and story in ways that support whole-being wellness and collective resilience. In partnership with Between the Strings, it expands this work across borders—grounding it in community while opening it to wider circles of care.
