Community Impact Statement
In the heart of El Remate, Guatemala, a small village of roughly 5,000 people, Between the Strings is redefining what community empowerment looks like. Through our grassroots music and art programs, we are turning creativity into opportunity — transforming local talent into lifelong skills that uplift individuals, families, and the entire region.
What began as a few instruments, a handful of tools, and the belief that creativity can change lives has grown into a movement that now inspires hundreds of children and adults each year. Our programs provide free access to guitar, ukulele, drums, keyboard, and digital music production (Ableton) lessons, alongside painting, woodcraft, instrument making, batik, tie-dye, and mural workshops led by local and visiting artists.
The results speak for themselves:

Educational Growth: Students who participate in our programs are more likely to stay in school, develop strong teamwork and communication skills, and gain confidence in expressing themselves
Economic Empowerment: Dozens of families have learned creative skills — from instrument repair to sustainable crafts — that can generate income and self-reliance.
Cultural Preservation: Every instrument built, mural painted, or song written helps preserve the Mayan and Guatemalan cultural heritage that defines our region
Social Inclusion: Our open-door workshops welcome everyone — children, teens, adults, and travelers — strengthening social bonds and building understanding across generations and backgrounds.
Environmental Awareness: By using recycled materials, natural dyes, and locally sourced wood, we teach that creativity and sustainability can go hand in hand.
Across Central America, studies show that creative education programs improve academic success by up to 20%, increase community engagement, and reduce youth delinquency. We see this firsthand every week — children staying engaged, parents participating, and neighbors gathering to celebrate local talent.
Between the Strings may be a small grassroots project, but its impact is big: a living example of how art, music, and collaboration can build a new world from the roots of a small village — one filled with hope, creativity, and purpose.
